Ilma Laterza-Codas'
abstract paintings are spiritual typographies, a window to the ignored
spaces of the human mind and spirit. Latin American art critic Vicky
Torres says Laterza-Codas' work is "loaded with vivid color"
and presents the observer "maps of the human spirit that represent
the geography and the history of the worlds within the subconscious."
In Laterza-Codas' paintings,
the observer finds lava-red deserts and impenetrable blue oceans,
created with vivid colors that push against each other and rocky
textures that protrude from the canvas. Laterza-Codas' careful use
of color, light and texture suggests shapes and volume, intensifies
tensions and clears spaces. Latin American art critic Ticio Escobar
says the results are "vigorously abstract, activated through
emotional impulse."
Laterza-Codas was born
in Paysandu, Uruguay. She has been studying art technique and theory
since 1984. Laterza-Codas is a Paraguayan citizen and lives and
paints in Asuncion, Paraguay.
